  • Those that help prevent the condition
  • Over-the-Counter: Treatments for conditions that do not require prescription
  • Prescription only: From a doctor or dermatologist for more serious conditions

The preventative products are formulated to treat the skin in an effort to prevent acne from arising like skin cleansers and makeup removers. Whilst many sufferers use these products there are even more people who just want to keep their skin clean and conditioned.

More specialized cleaners are designed in the same way as acne skin care products; they clean out the pores to help stop sebum or oil which clogs up the pores. When the pores become clogged with this oil, bacteria which can cause the problem begin to grow. These skin care products are designed to prevent this from happening.

Other skin care treatments can help exfoliate the skin and are easily obtainable in any drug store. The peels clean the skin by removing all surface pollution and dead skin cells which can block the pores.

Many different, specially formulated acne skin care products designed to reduce the problems have now been made available without prescription. Products that can remove the pore clogging oil contain the ingredient benzoyl peroxide; these include creams, cleansers and peels that slow down acne formation.

In case there is a reaction to the active ingredient benzoyl peroxide, dermatologists recommend that any product you use should be a low concentrations of no more that 5.5 parts per hundred. A good alternative to benzoyl peroxide is anything containing alpha hydroxy acid. It might just be a case of trial and error, if nothing seems to work speak to your dermatologist for any advice or try a different acne skin care product.

Only doctors or skin care specialists can prescribe some medications, including the use of antibiotics and certain ointments. In some case your doctor may suggest the pustules are drained of harmful contents under local anesthetic, this is a minor procedure which if carried out by yourself could result in skin damage.

Your doctor may even suggest a course of hormone therapy as a skin care treatment. Hormone changes are sometimes responsible for acne and can be very effective when used under prescription. Constant research has paid off, and whilst they cannot cure the condition, it is becoming easier to treat.
